What is folate?
Folates are vitamins that are not produced by the body but are employed through the food that is rich in legumes, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, asparagus. The amount that we can take through food, however, is conditioned by the mode of preservation and the cooking thereof, and may cause the destruction of 90% of these vitamins. In pregnancy it is recommended and require the recruitment of folate or folic acid because the demand is higher and because these vitamins may significantly reduce the risk of abnormalities in the nervous system and spine of the fetus (an example is spina bifida). They can also have a potential protective effect on various diseases that occur in the 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy such as pre-term birth and low birth weight.
